Emberward game modes explained
Updated September 23, 2026 — Emberward 1.0
Emberward ships with three modes built on the same block-and-tower engine: Adventure for progression, Endless for leaderboard glory, and Enigma Sanctum for a tight puzzle-box variant where the card pool is restricted. Here's what each one actually asks of you.
Adventure Mode — the main campaign
Adventure is where unlocks live. You fight through a series of stages laid out on an adventure map, taking on powerful bosses at world ends, across three worlds:
- Misty Forest — tutorial world; Normal clear unlocks Sacred Fire; contains Corrupted stages. Heroic difficulty here unlocks the Chrono Traveler.
- Bone Desert — Normal clear unlocks the Demon Flame; eleven documented monster types.
- Frost Ruins — Normal clear unlocks the Frost Flame; ice blocks, freezes and chill terrain.
Difficulties start at Normal and go up to at least Heroic (Chrono Traveler's unlock proves Heroic exists per world). Adventure stages mix in special modifiers you'll meet through tutorial pop-ups: minecart rails, bone walls, orc totems, territory zones, traps, wind, anomaly levels and corrupted levels.
Play Adventure if: you're new, you're hunting character/flame unlocks, or you want structured boss pacing.
Endless Mode — 80+ stages and a leaderboard
Endless strips away the campaign framing and asks one question: how far can your maze survive? It includes over 80 stages, special event maps and public leaderboards — the mode competitive players will live in. We've written a dedicated Endless Mode guide covering strategy differences; the short version: bring talents, bring your strongest unlocked characters, and build for wave scaling rather than stage gimmicks.
Enigma Sanctum — limited-deck defense
The roguelite's puzzle mode: you build the strongest possible defense from a limited set of cards. No "draft whatever the run gives you" comfort — the sanctum hands you a constrained pool and dares you to optimize it. It's the best mode for learning tower synergy, because constraints expose which combos are actually strong instead of which cards happened to drop.
Play Enigma Sanctum if: you understand the basics and want to get better fast. The skills transfer directly back to Adventure.
Which mode should I play first?
| Goal | Mode |
|---|---|
| Learn the game | Adventure (Normal, Misty Forest) |
| Unlock characters & flames | Adventure (push each world to Normal clear, then Heroic) |
| Practice synergy under pressure | Enigma Sanctum |
| Compete / test a perfected build | Endless |
| Farm specific unlock counters (blocks placed, gold spent, chests) | Adventure — counters accumulate across play, but Adventure's economy is the most predictable |
